About Liga Portugal 2Liga Portugal 2 (pronounced in Portuguese: [ˈliɣɐ puɾtuˈɣal dojʃ]), also referred to as the Portuguese Second Division, is the second-highest tier in the Portuguese football league system. At the end of each season, the top two teams are promoted to the top-tier Primeira Liga, while the bottom two teams are relegated to the third tier. Starting from the 2021–22 season, relegated teams no longer join what would become the fourth-tier Portuguese league; instead, they move to the newly established third-tier competition called Liga 3. ![]() League HistoryThe league was founded in 1990 under the name Segunda Divisão de Honra (Honorary Second Division), a unified national tier that replaced the regionalized Segunda Divisão (Second Division) as Portugal’s second-highest football league. When the division was sponsored by the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) in 1999, it was renamed Segunda Liga (Second League), a title retained until 2016—except for the 2005–2012 period, when it was known as Liga de Honra (Honor League). The competition was renamed LigaPro in 2016 and adopted its current name at the start of the 2020–21 season. ![]() Current SituationAs of the 2018–19 season, a total of 18 teams participated in the league, including reserve (B-team) sides of several top-tier clubs. Twenty different teams have won the division title; the most successful is Paços de Ferreira, with four victories, including the inaugural season and the recently concluded 2018–19 season. |
