Liverpool will host Brighton at home this week. Ahead of the match, Liverpool defender Kerkez emphasized the importance of winning at home in an interview with the club’s official website, and talked about his healthy competition with Andy Robertson, as well as Dominik Szőrboszlai’s outstanding form.
Q: What does this match against Brighton mean for Liverpool?
Kerkez: Every Premier League game is tough – that’s my firsthand experience since I came here. You have to be 100% focused in every game, because any team can beat you. But I believe that after the game against Inter Milan, we are prepared both physically and mentally. And this is our home ground. We must get back that feeling: playing at Anfield, opponents will never have an easy time. I hope everyone is ready – these three points are crucial.
Q: Did this week’s win over Inter Milan inject momentum into the team?
Kerkez: This victory was really key for boosting confidence and morale, and we need to carry this consistency into the upcoming games. Inter Milan had an unbeaten run before; they are a very tough and strong team. This was a great win.
Q: How are you adapting to the busy schedule and rotations? Has the competition with Robertson made you better?
Kerkez: This is the first time I’ve played a game every three days. I’m still adapting, but in the end, it’s the coach’s decision. Robertson is right beside me – he’s a great player with remarkable achievements at the club. We push each other; this is positive competition, and I’ve learned a lot from him. Everyone wants to play every game, especially me. But this is Liverpool – there are many games, and we need the best players in every position. Without competition, you might slack off after reaching a good form, and that’s when you need someone to pull you back.
Q: The team has kept two clean sheets in the last four games – does this mean the defense is improving?
Kerkez: We’ve discussed this a lot; the key is to get the basics right. We want to concede fewer goals, secure more clean sheets, and win games. This is very important for us defenders and the goalkeeper.
Q: As a new signing, how is your understanding with your teammates?
Kerkez: It’s getting better and better. We’ve done a lot of video analysis, and we often communicate with each other and with the coach. Just like when I went to Bournemouth before, this takes time. But I know that as we play more games, everything will get better.
Q: How do you evaluate the performance of your Hungarian compatriot Szőrboszlai this season?
Kerkez: I think he has taken another step forward this year. I’ve never seen a player who can play in so many different positions, but he really can. He contributes a lot both defensively and offensively. When the team isn’t performing well, it’s him who pushes everyone to catch up. He’s also a great leader in the locker room, just like Van Dijk and Salah. He’s my good friend – I’ve known him since he was 17 or 18.
